When I originally heard the name Dungen I used to be a bit put off thinking that these blokes would be some variety of mad death metal band but it seems Dungen is essentially Swedish for the Grove. Dungen’s recordings have an analogue sound to them. Particularly warm and inviting. Their music sounds extraordinarily alive is extraordinarily refreshing in the digital age.

That said I do not believe it’s fair to just classify Dungen as retro hallucinatory rock sung in Swedish because there is a real feeling of originality and invention to their music too. As a huge fan of Dungen’s last album I was awfully excited to hear this new release on it’s early leak. One of the coolest album openers I have heard in some considerable time.

The flute with heaps of delay is a great touch to drop into the track when there’s nothing left to melt. A lovely example of hallucinatory rock. This is an instrumental track as there’s actually no room left for vocals due to all the rock that takes up all the available space. There is a great mixture of intense guitar rock with extremely subtle keyboard sounds in this track ( and in a lot of the others on the album. ) I haven’t talked a lot of the vocals yet and I say compared with the incredible music the vocals do appear to get lost a bit in the mix but there are some gorgeous harmonies and it does not actually trouble me the vocals are all in Swedish. Dungen also has a softer side as shown in track four, the instrumental C Visar Vagen, which is an awfully lovely piece with stunning acoustic guitar, strings, organ, and flutes. This track has a little bit of an Indian vibe to it though it’s sophisticated. To me it actually sounds like an original melding together of many alternative influences. Track 6 Mon Amour might be the standout track on the album. At virtually nine mins it is a classic in length but as significantly it is a classic in arrangement as it is going to different engaging places musically. It kicks off with a familiar section.
